About

A Home for Independent Baseball Writers

baseball.fyi is an independent publication built by baseball fans, for baseball fans. No corporate ownership, no algorithms, no hot-take factories. Just the game we all love, covered by people who actually watch the games.

What We Cover

The stuff ESPN misses. Minor league call-ups and the prospects you'll be talking about before anyone else knows their name. Front office moves and the logic (or lack thereof) behind them. The trades nobody noticed. Historical context that reframes a current storyline. And one number per issue that changes how you see the sport.

Our History

baseball.fyi launched in 2019 with a simple idea: baseball coverage should sound like it was written by someone who actually watches games, not someone who refreshes Twitter for takes.

In March 2020, when COVID shut down the minor leagues and hundreds of players lost their income overnight, we did something about it. We launched a program to hire furloughed minor leaguers as writers and contributors. You can read the original announcement here: baseball.fyi hires furloughed minor leaguers

That program brought in voices you'd never hear on ESPN -- guys who'd spent six years riding buses in the Carolina League writing about what it's actually like to be a professional baseball player making $1,100 a month. Some of the best stuff we ever published came from those contributors.

We went dark after the 2021 season. Life happened. But baseball kept being baseball, and we missed writing about it too much to stay away.

So we're back for 2026. New writers, same DNA: independent, opinionated, and obsessed with the parts of the game that don't make SportsCenter.

Our Writers

We've got four writers on staff right now, and they're all here because they love the game more than is probably healthy.

Drew Maloney -- Editor and co-founder. Based in Philadelphia. Covers the big picture -- labor economics, front office strategy, and why your team just made that trade. Previously wrote about baseball at BaseballFYI.com from 2019-2021 including the furloughed minor leaguers program. Day job is in online reputation management, which has nothing to do with baseball and everything to do with why he needs a creative outlet.

Kevin Chao -- Staff writer. Bay Area native who grew up watching Bonds and never recovered. Covers the Pacific Rim -- NPB, KBO, and the pipeline of international talent that will shape the next decade of MLB. Also handles our analytics deep dives because someone has to.

Earl Stanhope -- Staff writer. Covers the minor leagues and independent ball from somewhere in the Carolinas. Spent a decade in sports journalism before deciding that writing for free about prospects nobody has heard of was more fun than writing for money about teams everyone has heard of. His "Call-Up Watch" column is one of the reasons we exist.

Mika Taniguchi -- Staff writer. Covers baseball history, culture, and the weird intersections between the two. Her piece on why ballpark organ music is disappearing was the most-read thing we published in 2021. Based in Chicago. Believes the DH is an abomination and will argue about it with anyone.

We also publish work from independent contributors. If you write about baseball and want to pitch us something, check out our Contribute page.
